The investment accelerates three ongoing projects to improve digital efficiency.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded $60 million to three projects dedicated to improving roadway safety technologies.
In Arizona, Maricopa County will use $20 million to deploy virtual roadside assistance units to more quickly communicate accidents and emergencies to emergency vehicles and freight fleets. In Texas, the A&M Transportation Institute will use $20 million to implement more accessible crossroad signals throughout the Greater Houston Area. And in Utah, the state’s transportation department will use $20 million to install vehicle-to-everything (V2X) safety measures across I-80, I-70, and I-25.
“As this Department explores every measure that can help reduce roadway fatalities, connected vehicle technology—like V2X—has potential to make roads safer and save lives,” said Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The grants we’re announcing today are helping accelerate the development and adoption of potentially life-saving V2X technology nationwide.”
